WE’RE MAKING OUR LIST AND WE ARE CHECKING IT THRICE

by The Head & The Hand Workshop

The Head & The Hand is a nonprofit, independent publisher and bookstore. We are a collective, a family, and a group of lifelong literary nerds who work hard to create a platform for diverse writing and community connection. If you donate to us, you will be supporting our three main projects, detailed below. We have suggested donation tiers on the right, but you can donate any amount you would like.

From Pop-up to Permanent
For those of you who don’t know, our bookstore is a pop-up experiment. We can only continue if the community around us supports us by buying books and utilizing our space. Our original lease was from May to December 2019. Do you want to see us extend it into 2020? Consider supporting us by donating on the righthand side of the page.

Light Our Way
One of our main publishing projects is our traveling chapbook vending machine, which has graced spaces around Philadelphia since 2013. The main series we host in the machine is the socially conscious Shockwire Chapbook Series: Shockwire stories are snapshots of a time and place where expressions of curiosity, empathy, and acceptance shine a light on their absence in everyday life. We amplify our contribution to a national conversation by writing toward a deeper understanding of ourselves and one another and sharing that vision in the form of a chapbook. Vehicle for Change
Vessel is our youth writing program that introduces student writers to the vital concept of a writing community while giving them their first experience with professional publishing. Their stories are edited, designed, and printed as short-form works called "chapbooks" and displayed in H&H's chapbook vending machine, customized to dispense stories instead of snacks.  We see the chapbook vending machine as a vessel students can fill with creative expressions that reflect the time and place. The machine becomes a catalyst for creating a writing community in schools such as Science Leadership Academy and Building 21. We hope to expand in 2020. Consider supporting our educational programming by donating on the righthand side of this page.
